Cuernavaca – A City to Live? ... Part II
In my first article on Cuernavaca I stated, “Since it is a modern city also, there is a balance between the old, the very old and the new.” In this article, I will try to present you, the reader, with some of the ‘new’ (what one expects to find in a modern city) to be found in this beautiful and enchanting place.
• Getting around
The city's bus system is economical and easy to use. However, once you are in central Cuernavaca, you can walk to most places of interest. Many local buses, and those to nearby towns, leave from the southern corner of the city's market and, for convenience, advertise their destinations on their windshields.
• Do you want to learn Spanish?
Cuernavaca has a world-wide reputation for its excellent Spanish language schools. Consequently, she has seen many visitors from all over the world that came to learn Spanish. These are pretty much hands-on, immersion-type programs that impart a sense of culture and history as well.
• Education
This is a modern tropical city that plays host to those fortunate tourists who have come to know her also as a cultural and educational centre. Unlike those cities that are generally recognized as tourist meccas, Cuernavaca has the largest concentration of research scientists in Latin America. Accordingly, there are a number of scientific research institutes, seventeen universities and extensions of the National University in Mexico City. Cuernavaca has the highest concentration of scientists and researchers in Latin America.
As a university centre, Cuernavaca has attracted many artists and intellectuals who have made their home here. It will come to no surprise then that here one can find poetry readings, concerts, ballet and theatre performances and art exhibitions.
• Recreation and Entertainment
Whether you are active in sports or a spectator, a nature lover, a health enthusiast or someone just interested in leisure there are plenty of facilities and conveniences to suit the modern woman and man. The city and surroundings are filled with gardens, tennis, volleyball and squash courts, spas and swimming pools, golf (a particularly popular past time)courses, and horseback riding facilities too mention just some. Not far off, one may enjoy mountain climbing.
During the day, the Zócalo (the square in the centre of the city) is where locals and visitors mix in street cafes, restaurants and coffeehouses in a setting more typical of a European than an American city.
As for the evenings and nights, for the party-going individual, there are discotheques and music bars that one may enjoy until early next day.
And, on the weekends, in addition to the tourists, the locals, students and vacationers from Mexico City make Cuernavaca come alive. Those modern day troubadours, Mariachi bands, wander along the Plaza de Armas serenading passersby. Along the Plazuels del Zacate, friends and friends-to-be gather and mix along the bars and cafes.
To get away from the loud music, dancing scene, and bars, Cuernavaca has a variety of cinemas and theatres. As for variety, national and international music and dance performances, films with Spanish subtitles and live theatre are quite popular.
• Shopping
For those looking to buy that special reminder of Cuernavaca there are the local markets that sell items such as souvenirs, textiles, and silver. When tour buses arrive, many handicraft vendors sell their wares outside the cathedral gates. Onyx, quartz, crystals, and tiger’s eye are sold at several of the public markets around town as well as other gifts, souvenirs, and crafts.
When visiting Cuernavaca, save some money! You can get clothes tailored locally at a fraction of the prices in Canada or the U.S. Also of note is that dentists and other medical practitioners are much less expensive than what one has to expect to pay in the U.S.
