ONU to Certify the 250 million trees planted by Mexico
SEMARNAT | Translated by Eduardo Rincón Gallardo – May 2008

United Nations acknowledges that Mexico is striving to become a cleaner country: Environment Minister Elvira Quesada

The United Nations Organization will certify the 250 million trees our country planted  as part of the ProArbol program during year 2007, complying with its compromise to contribute 25 percent of the world’s goal; so informed the Minister of the Environment and Natural Resources, Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada.

He said he will soon meet with the Executive Director of the United Nations program for the Environment (PNUMA), to inform him of the work Mexico has carried out in the field of reforestation.

This way, said Elvira Quesada, UNO will recognize Mexico for being a country concerned with conserving and recuperating its forests, jungles, rivers, brooks and beaches.

Achieving this objective meant an effort on the part of the three levels of government and society in general, to give nature back its lungs and to contribute as a country with the world’s actions oriented against the effects of climate change.

He underlined the collaboration of all the republic’s states, farmers, commoners, foresters, society, parents, children and young people who adhered to this commitment.

Based on figures by the Comisión Nacional Forestal (National Forests’ Commission), the states where more trees were planted were: Veracruz, with 36,805,566; Puebla, 21,544,049; Jalisco,   20,995,108; Estado de México, 16,623,503; Chiapas, 15,307,392 and Michoacán, 14,862,462.

It is important to point out that these six states concentrated 50.1% of the total trees planted in the whole country.
